No injuries in Rolling Meadows apartment fire
Authorities reported no injuries in a late Wednesday night apartment fire in Rolling Meadows.
Rolling Meadows Fire Department officials said they were alerted to the fire just after 10 p.m. by an automatic fire alarm as well as numerous calls from apartment residents.
Firefighters did not see smoke or fire emanating from the building upon arrival, but after entering the three-story complex at 5600 Astor Lane, they encountered smoke, Deputy Chief Pete Sutter said.
A fire was located in a first-floor rear unit. The resident of the unit got out safely before firefighters arrived.
The fire was extinguished within 15 minutes, Sutter said.
The unit sustained significant fire and water damage, rendering it uninhabitable. Residents of all other units were able to return to their apartments, Sutter said.
Firefighters were on scene until about midnight.
Sutter said the fire was caused by unattended food on the stove.
The building's fire alarm and suppression equipment operated as expected, he added.
No damage estimate was available.
