A great solution that doesn't work

Thanks to our do-nothing elected state officials who can't pass a budget and pay their bills, drivers will no longer get license plate renewal notices in the mail. So aside from saving millions of dollars on postage, etc., the state will now also collect millions more by fining people who forget to renew.

In my case, I have two cars, and two motorcycles and all have a different month of renewal, so it's a bit cumbersome to keep track. But not to worry, the Secretary of State's office has offered a solution. Just go to www.cyberdriveillinois.com and you can register your license plates and have an email reminder sent to you so you won't forget and risk an expensive ticket.

I did that for all my vehicles. And the emails that I got back from the state confirming my reminders, thanked me for signing up and "Going Green with Paperless License Plate Renewals."

It made me feel good about saving money and trees. But the next sentence reads, "Your license plate email renewal notification from the Secretary of State's Office may take one renewal cycle before it is in effect."

Isn't it just like our state government to come up with a solution to a problem, and then tell us that it won't work? Will the last one out of Illinois please turn off the lights?
