Christian Liberty Academy to honor fallen graduate
Family members of Chief Warrant Officer 2 Kevin "Mose" Weiss will gather with students and staff at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 28, in the Grace Gym at Christian Liberty Academy for a ceremony in Weiss' honor.
Dec. 2 will mark the anniversary of the 32-year-old McHenry native's death in an Apache helicopter crash near Clarksville, Tennessee. Weiss was a 2001 graduate of the private, Christian school in Arlington Heights, where officials have decided that a permanent memorial shall be established.
The ceremony is open to the public, and will include unveiling of a bronze plaque as well as the presentation to Weiss' parents and wife of two patriotic memorial paintings courtesy of Honor America's Valor and General Kinematics. School leaders said Weiss' example in life and his line-of-duty death warrant a lasting remembrance at the school, 502 W. Euclid Ave.
"I didn't have the honor of meeting Kevin … but I've heard so much about him," said Bob Stack, a Christian Liberty Academy science teacher who is among those coordinating the Nov. 28 event. "What a remarkable person. I'm just in awe of his accomplishments."
Weiss earned many commendations and decorations throughout his U.S. Army career, including the Air Medal; three Army commendation medals; the Joint Service Achievement Medal; two Army Achievement medals; Combat Action, Army Aviator, Air Assault and Parachutist badges; and the Ranger tab; among others.
He is survived by his wife, Bethany, and their children, Lucas and Susan Jane; his parents, Kevin and Susan Weiss of McHenry; and seven younger siblings, as well as aunts, uncles and cousins.
Along with the plaque unveiling and painting presentations, the ceremony is set to include the presentation of colors, national anthem, opening prayer by the Rev. Calvin Lindstrom, pastor at Christian Liberty, a presentation by Susan Weiss, and choir music. A reception for the Weiss family and invited guests will follow.
