St. Charles man charged in Elgin armed robbery

A St. Charles man has been charged with the armed robbery of a gas station in Elgin earlier this month, police said.

Ryan J. Witkus, 18, of the 200 block of N. Tyler Road, was charged with attempted armed robbery with a firearm, according to a news release.

Elgin police were called just after 8 p.m. July 12 about a robbery at Circle K, 460 S. McLean, the release said. The clerk told officers that a man displayed a handgun, demanded money and left on foot.

Witkus turned himself in to police July 15 and was taken to Kane County jail; he was in court July 16.
