Side Street Studio Arts debuts 'The String,' a new monthly publication

Side Street Studio Arts in Elgin is starting "The String," a free monthly publication showcasing work inspired by and in response to the world around us. The aim is to create a platform for the voices of those who are marginalized, silenced, and underrepresented in the world of literature and visual art.

The first issue came out July 3.

Deadline for submission is the final Friday of the month. They are now welcoming work of many kinds, including: essays, fiction and nonfiction stories, interviews, printmaking, drawings, poetry, and humor.

Organizers ask that all work and submissions be recent and made by those within the Fox Valley area. You will be notified as soon as possible if you are to be included in this next month's issue of "The String."

"The String" will be released every first Friday of the month and be available at many Elgin establishments, including downtown retail shops, restaurants, bars, and at Side Street Studio Arts' "MADE" retail art storefront located at 13 S. Spring St.

Side Street Studio Arts strives to support and elevate the role of the artist in society. With thoughtful attention to those who have been systemically underrepresented and underrecognized, artists of color, and those who identify as female and LGBTQ+, Side Street aims to lead, serve, and advance the voices of the artists of Elgin and beyond.

Side Street Studio Arts was founded by Melvin and Erin Rehberg in 2013 as an outlet for the Elgin arts scene. Side Street provides educational and creative resources and an inclusive space run by artists. Side Street's mission is to support the artist and artistic journey through collaboration.
