Porter County officials approve funding for airport project

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, Ind. (AP) - Local officials have agreed to allocate more than $317,000 in hospital sale interest money to an $11.3 million reconstruction of the Porter County Regional Airport's main runway.

The (Munster) Times (http://bit.ly/1OHHJNz ) reports that last week the Porter County Council approved a request for funding out of the interest generated on the 2007 sale of the county hospital. The Porter County Board of Commissioners will consider final approval of the request March 15.

The Federal Aviation Administration will contribute 90 percent of the money for the runway project, the state will pick up 5 percent, and the Indiana Regional Development Authority and Porter County will split the remaining 5 percent.

The first phase of the project was completed last summer. The second and final phase is scheduled to begin this spring.
