Dementia-friendly certification available for businesses

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - A senior home care provider has started a program offering businesses in Bloomington a certification as an Alzheimer's Friendly Business.

Home Instead Senior Care's effort trains employees how to best serve those with Alzheimer's disease and dementia. The (Bloomington) Herald-Times reports (http://bit.ly/2eXxXy6 ) at least three businesses have the certification so far, including Cozy Table restaurant. Owner Kellie Biehle says her staff tries "to treat all people with the same level of respect."

Home Instead and Autumn Hills Alzheimer's Special Care Center also offer the half-hour training to banks, grocery stores and pharmacies. It's free and available in person or online. Training includes teaching employees to limit distractions, present a simplified list of dining options and allowing customers extra response time.

Businesses that complete the training get a sticker to display in their windows.
