Getting priorities straight on health care

Through no fault of our own, my son and I have preexisting conditions. Eighteen hours after my son was born, I had a stroke which resulted in a permanent disability and epilepsy.

My son is now 24 years old. At 19, he was diagnosed with Barrett's Esophagus. Developing Barrett's at such a young age increases his risk of esophageal cancer. He will need medication and follow-up care the rest of his life. He is currently covered under our health insurance. I worry about what will happen in two years, when he turns 26.

Ralph Waldo Emerson has said that "the first wealth is health." I can only hope that the Republicans will get their priorities straight.
