State awards $400,000 grant for Presidential Park improvements

Plans for improvements at Algonquin's Presidential Park got a boost with a $400,000 state grant.

The Open Space Land Acquisition and Development grant will help pay for $2.2 million in improvements to the park. The project, which includes a new sports-themed playground, updated challenge course and fitness equipment, improved soccer fields and an open-air pavilion with restroom facilities, is expected to begin in 2023.

"We are very grateful to receive funding for the improvements at Presidential Park through this very competitive statewide grant process," Algonquin Village President Debby Sosine said. "The improvements to current amenities and construction of new features at Presidential Park will have a positive, lasting impression on our community as a whole."

Improvements to the park were identified as a priority in the village's parks and recreation comprehensive plan, which was adopted in 2021.

The state is providing $400,000 toward the $2.2 million project. The remaining costs will be covered through local funds.

Presidential Park is located at 700 Highland Ave. in Algonquin.
