Dog, two parakeets rescued from Aurora structure fire

A dog and two parakeets were rescued Thursday from a fire in Aurora that left three apartments uninhabitable, officials said Friday.

Firefighters responded at noon to a report of a structure fire on the 100 block of North 4th Street. When they arrived, they found fire showing from the exterior of a two-story home that was converted into three apartments. Flames were traveling up the side of the building and extending into the attic.

The resident of one of the units was not at home when the fire started, and the other two units were vacant, officials said.

Firefighters rescued the pets during a search of the building. Crews brought the fire under control in about 30 minutes, officials said.

There were no injuries. The structure was deemed uninhabitable. Officials said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
