Activities again rolling out in Highland Park

Support Highland Park

With the return of things such as Deerfield's Food Truck Thursdays, area events are returning following the tragedy in Highland Park on July 4.

To help support residents and businesses in Highland Park, activity is moving forward at The Lot, 523 Central Ave., at the southwest corner of Central and St. Johns avenues in downtown Highland Park.

Takeout Tuesdays resumed July 26 and will continue from 5-8 p.m. each Tuesday through Sept. 13. Each Tuesday features a different theme - Aug. 2 is "Party Planning Night" - and people may pick up dinner at a local restaurant or from on-site vendors and eat at The Lot's outdoor tables, or bring their own picnic items.

The Ravinia Brewing Company truck will be there at The Lot, as will live music, games like giant checkers, chess and Jenga, and a variety of wellness and fitness vendors. So, too, will crafts and activities presented by The Art Center of Highland Park, and Landmark Theater will host weekly trivia inspired by the weekly theme.

Events other than Takeout Tuesday come to Central and St. Johns as well this summer. A vintage car show is slated for 4-6 p.m. Aug. 6, and a "Vegetarian Fest" arrives Aug. 20 from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. with vegetarian options from a variety of restaurants, cooking demonstrations, music, meditation and yoga.

Don't pull a hammy

Already accomplished in delivering a pitch and hitting a home run, the Deerfield-Bannockburn-Riverwoods and Northbrook chambers of commerce will try to prove their mettle on the softball field.

Members and friends of the two chambers who are over 18 years old are invited to join the Northbrook vs. DBR Softball Classic from 4:30-7 p.m. Friday, July 29, at Maplewood Park, 900 Clay Court.

There is no cost to join the roster, but people must register. Start by visiting www.dbrchamber.com or northbrookchamber.org.

The announcement advises to bring your own glove, so we're thinking it's a game of 12-inch softball and not 16-inch. That ball moves fast.
