Girls soccer: Big second half propels Vernon Hills

Vernon Hills 8, Waukegan 1: The Cougars scored six times in the second half after leading only 2-1 at halftime of the nonconference game.
Ziggy Jezorski, Ashley Sawa and Gill Johnson each scored twice for host Vernon Hills (2-2-1). Ryan Schofield and Julia Kempf also had goals. Kempf also had 2 assists. Sawa, Marley Reback, Julia Neary, Schofield and Jessie Biede had assists as well.
"You have to give credit to Waukegan for coming out ready to play and putting us under pressure right away," Cougars coach Mike McCaulou said. "In the second half we played with composure and kept possession, which allowed us to be successful."
Grant 1, Zion-Benton 0: Addy Karpilovsky scored the lone goal off an assist from Emily Urbina, as the Bulldogs won their first game in the Round Lake tournament.
"It's tough coming back from Spring Break right into a game, but credit to the girls for getting it done," Grant coach Olivia Jansen said. "It wasn't our prettiest game of soccer, but it got us on the right foot heading into the rest of the tournament."
Round Lake 8, North Chicago 0: Dana Devera scored 4 goals, Evelyn Hierzer added a pair, and the Panthers won the Northern Lake County Conference opener.
Alexandria Wawrzyniak and Susana Albor also had goals for Round Lake. Wawrzyniak and Anna Vazquez each had 2 assists, and Claudia Hernandez had one as well.
