Report: Buffalo Grove lawmaker wants students to design new state flag
A bill has been introduced to hold a contest to choose a new student-designed state flag, the Illinois News Network is reporting.
State Rep. Daniel Didech, a Democrat from Buffalo Grove, introduced the bill to replace the state flag, the Illinois News Network is reporting.
House Bill 3799 calls for the Illinois Secretary of State to start a contest for a new design for the official Illinois state flag. The contest would be open to residents 21 and younger and students attending a public university in the state.
The winning design would be selected by a state flag committee, then a bill would be drafted to change the state flag. That second bill would need legislature approval and the governor's signature.
Didech said he crafted the bill after meeting with two Stevenson High School students who proposed the contest, the media company is reporting.
The current Illinois state flag has been in use since 1868.
Didech's bill has yet to be assigned to a committee.
