Dangerous factionalism
George Washington warned us, "The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge ... is itself a frightful despotism." Many of our founders worried about the factionalism of a democracy as possibly tearing it apart. I see it as a lack of concern for the common good as stated in the Preamble of the Constitution. Too much I-Me-My, not enough We-Us-Our, too much greed (unwillingness to pay workers a living wage and disregard for the ecosystem of the planet), too much gerrymandering, too much voter exclusion and racism, too much self-centered egotism. All real threats imposed by factionalism.
