Rolling Meadows volunteer family named 'outstanding' by Special Olympics

The Geraci family of Rolling Meadows has received the 2017 Special Olympics Illinois' Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award.

Sal and Karen, parents of athlete Tory Geraci, have been volunteering for Special Olympics' North Suburban Cook Area 18 for 16 years, officials said. Sal handles logistics at events and raises funds through special events, in-kind donations and the Palatine Polar Plunge. Karen is on the area's event management team and helped develop a family committee.

The Geracis were recognized at a reception before the Summer Games' opening ceremony June 9 at Illinois State University in Normal.
