Burton pours in 24 as Round Lake wins

Freshman Lilli Burton scored a career-high 24 points, and Round Lake's girls basketball team defeated host Richmond-Burton 46-35 in the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic on Friday night.

"I'm proud of how our girls came out and competed right from the start," Panthers coach Molly Hennig said. "We needed someone to lead our offense, and Lilli Burton did big-time."

Amari Cole added 12 points for Round Lake (2-12, 1-3 tournament), which plays Hoffman Estates at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in its tournament finale.

Libertyville 40, Niles West 27: Lauren Huber had 11 points, 7 steals and 6 rebounds, and the Wildcats opened their own winter tournament with a victory.

Margaret Buchert added 9 points on three 3-pointers for the Wildcats (7-4), who play Vernon Hills at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Libertyville freshman Emily Fisher made her season debut and had 5 points, 4 rebounds and 3 blocks coming off the bench. Libertyville led 9-4 after one quarter, 23-7 at halftime and 31-17 after three.

Cary-Grove 35, Mundelein 26: At Libertyville, the Mustangs dropped their opening game in the winter tournament.

Morgan Frank led Mundelein (1-10) with 20 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocks. She had missed the Mustangs' last game due to an injury.

McHenry 61, Wauconda 34: At McHenry, in the first-place bracket of the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic, the host Warriors held the Bulldogs to their lowest point total of the season.

Ella Karg and Kiley Szmajda had 13 and 10 points, respectively, for Wauconda (8-4, 3-1 tourney)), which plays Marian Central at noon Saturday at McHenry for third place.

"It was a disappointing night," Bulldogs coach Jaime Dennis said. "McHenry came ready to play and we did not. They are a good team. They played harder and smarter than we did. The only bright spot was the third quarter. We played a good third, outscoring them 20-12. It is something to build on."

Johnsburg 38, Lakes 20: At McHenry, Grace Sullivan had 9 points and 8 rebounds for the Eagles in the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic game.

Lakes (2-10, 1-3 tourney) finish the tournament with a 9 a.m. tipoff Saturday against Crystal Lake Central at McHenry.

Grayslake Central 66, Harvard 28: Kate Bullman and MK Drevline (four 3-pointers) each scored 16 points, as the host Rams won the nonconference game.

Lauryn Cartee and Carissa Guerrier each had 8 points for Grayslake Central (9-3).

Woodstock North 51, Grayslake North 34: At Richmond-Burton, the Knights dropped their second straight game in the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic.

Grayslake North (6-8, 2-2) wraps up the tournament Saturday with a noon start against Marengo at Richmond-Burton.
