Brazil's Santos handed 3-0 loss over 3-year-old red card

SAO PAULO (AP) - A red card handed out nearly three years ago has put Argentine club Independiente on the brink of the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals.

Independiente was awarded a 3-0 win over Santos in the Copa Libertadores after the Brazilian team fielded an ineligible player in the first leg of their round-of-16 matchup.

South America's soccer confederation made the announcement on Tuesday less than nine hours before the second leg between the two clubs. Santos said it will appeal the decision.

The first leg in Buenos Aires on Aug. 8 ended 0-0, but Independiente argued that Uruguayan midfielder Carlos Sanchez should have been suspended for the game because of a red card he was given in November 2015. Sanchez was then playing for Argentina's River Plate in the Copa Sudamericana, the continent's second major club tournament. This was his first game back under CONMEBOL's jurisdiction since then, as he left after that match to play for Mexico's Monterrey.
