Cook and Lake County football roundup: Rolling Meadows handles Wheeling on Saturday after Friday's game postponed

Friday's Wheeling-Rolling Meadows game was postponed due to a "an abundance of caution," according to letter posted Friday night by Wheeling principal Bradford Hubbard.

That letter was written after an unnamed threat was made on Friday and was reported to the Wheeling police.

It was determined that it was safe to play Saturday and the game kicked off about 10:30 a.m. Students, parents and fans were allowed at the game Saturday. There was also an extra number of Wheeling police officers on hand.

The game went off without any incident. Rolling Meadows got off to a strong start and beat the host Wildcats 44-14.

"The atmosphere on a Saturday is not as it is on a Friday," Rolling Meadows coach Sam Baker said. "But that was out of our control. All we can control is our attitude, effort and execution."

Colin Ford threw a pair of touchdown passes for Rolling Meadows (2-4, 1-1) to Ryan Chaney and Peyton Wiles. Zak Allain had a pair of touchdown runs along with Vinny Piccolo and DJ Washington.

Wheeling (1-5, 0-1), which had been struggling offensively, showed improvement. The Wildcats scored nearly as many points Saturday as they have in the last three games combined (15).

Justin Ghibea threw a pair of touchdown passes to Patrick Tinsley, including an 85-yard scoring play.

Maine West 42, Maine East 0: Maine West (6-0, 2-0) became playoff eligible with their convincing win over their district rivals.

Tommy Delaney (13-of-20, 141 yards) fired a trio of touchdown passes. Ben Cooper caught a 6-yarder, Ernie Martinez a 9-yarder and Kyle Ramirez a 5-yarder. ONell Miller-Smith (11 carries, 139 yards) scored on a 13-yard run. David Diaz, who had a fumble return for a touchdown, along with Cooper, Alex Gorbenko, Maks Makota and Frank Norman led the defense which held Maine East (1-5, 0-2) to 61 yards of offense.

Norman also scored for the Warriors. He recovered a blocked punt by Cooper for a touchdown.

Maine South 54, Glenbrook North 15: Maine South (5-0, 2-0) won its fifth in a row.

The Hawks trailed Glenbrook North 7-0 and then 15-14 before they exploded with 40 unanswered points. Michael Dellumo scored on a 1-yard run, and Constantine Coines threw three touchdown passes.

Coines tossed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Evan Agosto, a 41-yard pass to Julian Turner and a 35-yard pass to Nicholas Wong. Coines also scored on an 8-yard touchdown run.

Anthony Capesius had a 2-yard touchdown run while JJ Schlenhardt had a 4-yard scoring run. Ethan Stumpf had a 32-yard field goal.

Buffalo Grove 43, Elk Grove 8: Buffalo Grove (4-2, 1-1) bounced back quite well after their shutout loss to Hersey last week.

Anthony Palano had touchdown runs of one and 17 yards. He also caught a 13-yard pass from Payton Diaz (12-of-18, 192 yards).

Matthew Maradkel scored on a 3-yard run and Jacob Hensley added a 14-yard scoring run.

The defense was led by Vukasin Dejkovic, who had an interception return for a touchdown. He and Alex Branas, Tyler Baker and Caden Watson limited Elk Grove to 21 rushing yards and 125 yards of total offense.

Elk Grove tallied late on a 25-yard touchdown pass.

North Chicago 57, Round Lake 12: Evan West threw a pair of touchdown passes for Round Lake (0-6, 0-4).

Stevenson 24, Lake Forest 13: Stevenson (4-2, 2-2) got a pair of second half touchdowns to hand Lake Forest (4-2, 3-1) its first North Suburban Conference loss.

Aidan Crawley, who scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in the first half, scored again on a 1-yard run to put the Patriots up 17-6. After a Lake Forest touchdown cut the lead to 17-13 early in the fourth quarter, Stevenson's Fatman Thorndyke had a 9-yard touchdown run to help seal the victory.

Niles West 46, Vernon Hills 20: Niles West (5-1, 2-0) was just a bit too much for the Cougars. Giuseppe Urso rushed for 122 yards om 14 carries and had a 5-yard touchdown run for Vernon Hills (2-1, 1-1). The Cougars also got rushing touchdowns of 20 and 13 yards from Louis Gatta.

Grant 24, Grayslake Central 7: Grant (4-2, 3-1) scored 24 consecutive points to win in Grayslake. Grayslake Central (2-4, 2-2) got a late touchdown run from Romeo Reyes.

Grayslake North 20, Lakes 7: Lakes (1-5, 1-3) scored first on a 39-yard pass from Ean Ankney to Provide Matumona. But it was all Grayslake North (2-4, 1-3) from there.

Dominique Pulliam had three touchdowns for the Knights. He had a 60-yard touchdown catch from Mitchell Hughes. Pulliam also had an interception return for a touchdown and a 3-yard touchdown run.

Leyden 7, Morton 6: Trailing 6-0 headed into the fourth quarter, Tamarion Garner changed the fortunes for Leyden (2-4, 2-1) when he busted off a 70-yard touchdown run to tie the game. Nick Gattuso then knocked through the conversion kick for the difference.
