Maine West Junior Earns Third in IHSA Journalism Competition

Maine West junior Sabrina Bukvarevic finished third in the IHSA state championships for journalism in the feature writing category on Friday, April 22 in Normal. She finished first in the IHSA sectional competition earlier, one of seven sectional competitions across the state leading up to the state competition.

Students are given a prompt and a data set with 1.5 hours to write the full article during the competitions.

Laurie McGowan is Bukvarevic's journalism teacher and the Westerner school newspaper sponsor. "Going up against the best writers in the state, Sabrina showed that her talent is nearly unrivaled," McGowan said.

Next year, Bukvarevic will be co-editor-in-chief of the Westerner.
