Find underlying issues
More gun control laws will not solve the problem. Gun control laws are like going to a doctor's office with a broken arm and the doctor just prescribes pain medicine. It makes you feel better, but does not solve the underlying problem.
To reduce violence in our society, we need experts to dig through all of the data to determine the root causes of the issue. FBI data indicates that 285 deaths are due to rifles, 5,782 due to handguns, and 1,956 due to undetermined firearms. Knives and other sharp objects caused 1,490 deaths. Banning assault style rifles will have little effect. The CDC says there are 88,000 deaths due to alcohol. There are many more deaths due to alcohol than guns, but you don't hear people calling for prohibition again.
We should concentrate on all violent acts and not just gun violence. Take practical steps, like banning bump stocks, which are not controversial. We need to work on fixing the existing systems. How many acts of violence could have been prevented if the systems worked?
If we rush to find solutions, we will not solve the underlying issue and we will have little chance of really making a difference.
