Is there a particular issue that motivates you, and if so, what is it?I have had the honor to serve on the Arlington Heights School District 25 School Board for twelve years. As a life long resident and graduate of Arlington Heights School District 25, I am motivated to give back to the school district that has provided me, as well as my three children, a strong foundation and love of learning. I will continue to be motivated to help foster positive school, family and community partnerships in order to sustain the high achievements of our students in Arlington Heights School District 25.What do you think about the process for measuring student success in your district? Is it adequate? What changes, if any, do you propose?I think Arlington Heights School District 25 does a remarkable job of continuously assessing our students to ensure that students' individual learning needs are being met. The teachers in Arlington Heights School District 25 utilize, both state and local, as well as both formative and summative, assessments for our students. The student assessment data provides students, parents, teachers, principals and our Arlington Heights School District 25 Department of Student Learning team valuable data to analyze for student, teacher and school improvement. Each school year, every school in our district provides the School Board with a detailed School Improvement Plan, which includes changes to the curriculum and instruction to meet the needs of the students at their school. I continue to be impressed at the time, effort and energy each school has provided to ensure that every student in their school has their academic, behavior and emotional needs met.How big a role do you think the board of education should play in setting the curriculum for students and what ideas do you have for changes to the current curriculum?I believe that the School Board should consistently monitor and ensure that the curriculum and instruction is meeting the academic, social and emotional needs of all the students. All curriculums, along with school district goals and objectives align with the Arlington Heights School District 25 Strategic Plan. The Arlington Heights School District 25 Strategic Plan, which was approved by the Board of Education this school year, was developed by a committee, comprised of administrators, teachers, parents, school board members and Arlington Heights community members. As the Arlington Heights School District 25 School Board representative to the Strategic Plan committee, I was able to see first hand how the committee analyzed the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and potential threats to our school district. As a committee, we collaboratively worked together to create a vision and mission statement as well as established curriculum and program goals, which best meet the needs of all students. An action plan and time line of the Strategic Plan was created and will be reviewed on an annual basis. All stakeholders in our school district worked together to develop the curriculum as well as program changes and goals for the students in Arlington Heights School District 25.What budget issues will your district have to confront and what measures do you support to address them? If you believe cuts are necessary, what programs and expenses should be reduced or eliminated? On the income side, do you support any tax or fee increases? The current Arlington Heights School District 25 School Board and administration have been financially prudent. The district is in a healthy financial position in comparison to many neighboring school districts. However, as all are well aware, the State of Illinois continues to face challenges in funding school districts. In addition to the funding challenges, the future of education may demand change because of significant federal and state legislation and the increasing needs of serving all students. In the last ten years, Arlington Heights School District 25 has experienced an influx in the number of students, as well as an increase in student learning and language needs. In addition, we are currently studying the concept of full day kindergarten, which could include funding additional building additions. The cost of operating our schools continues to rise and our school district will need to discuss with the community the fiscal impact on all programs. As a School Board, we will need to continue to be vigilant in understanding and interpreting legislative laws as well as community needs and their financial impact on operating schools. What role can and should school choice play in your district? If Congress or the state approves a voucher system or other means giving students broader choices among public and private schools, how will that affect your district? What is the appropriate response for the board of education of a public school system? There are a number of choices for the children in the Arlington Heights community. We have a number of successful parochial, private and home schools in addition to our high achieving public Arlington Heights School District 25. As a former school administrator in Fremont School District 79, in which a charter school operated within the district and shared state revenue, I have experienced first hand the financial ramifications on a public school district. In addition, as a professor of graduate students in Educational Leadership, I have discussed and learned from my graduate students who are working in pubic, parochial and charter schools. I believe it would be more advantageous for our public school district to look at building positive community partnerships and find ways to seek factors and resources which affect school achievement to help meet the needs of the community it serves. What other issues, if any, are important to you as a candidate for this office?I believe that though Arlington Heights School District 25 is a high achieving school district, which continues to attract many young families to our community, we must continue to have open communication with all our stakeholders and foster strong parent, community and business partnerships to further enhance not only the educational experience for all students but also to enhance the entire community it serves. We are very fortunate to live in a community in which our schools, library, park district and the village of Arlington Heights work together for the good of all the residents. Please name one current leader who most inspires you.Dr. Epstein. I teach a course in which her text/research helps students understand the effect on student achievement when schools, families and community build partnerships. What is the biggest lesson you learned at home growing up?As a first generation daughter of immigrants, I learned the importance of accepting others, their heritage and the diversity they bring to our community. If life gave you one do-over, what would you spend it on?I wouldn't do anything over because all of my experiences, both good and bad, have led me to become the person I am today. What was your favorite subject in school and how did it help you in later life?English. Learning to effectively communicate and to connect to others has been a valuable asset for me throughout my life.If you could give your children only one piece of advice, what would it be?To continue to learn something new each and every day and to appreciate and embrace each day of your life!
