Gail Borden to celebrate state bicentennial Oct. 28

On Dec. 3, the state of Illinois will be 200 years old. A birthday this monumental cannot go uncelebrated.

Later in the week, discover the fascinating history of the Beaux Arts-style Sears Gallery, located on the northwest corner of Academy Place and Park Street. Learn about Elgin's first art museum and recital hall, which opened in 1924 as a donation from Judge Nathaniel and Laura Sears, as well as with its art collection and Elgin's cultural life in the years after World War II.

The program with presenter Ann Chipman will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, in the Elgin Room at the main library. Register at www.gailborden.info.
