Proceedings to begin Wednesday in Illinois eye-gouging case

PINCKNEYVILLE, Ill. (AP) - The jury has been selected in the trial of a southern Illinois man accused of gouging and clawing another man's eyes.

Allen Fisher of Swanwick is charged with two counts of aggravated battery and one count of intimidation in connection with an April 2018 assault. The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan reports that according to court documents, the 51-year-old Fisher "gouged, or clawed the eyes" of a 46-year-old Nashville man "resulting in partial or total blindness" to the man's eyes.

WSIL-TV reports more than 80 Perry County residents were called for jury selection. The judge said that was necessary to find a fair jury due to news coverage of the case. Prosecutors and defense attorneys are to begin arguments Wednesday. The judge said Monday that he expected a verdict by Friday.
