State court rejects prosecutor's appeal to allow late voting

QUINCY, Ill. (AP) - An Illinois appellate court has denied a request by the Adams County state's attorney to vacate a stay issued last week barring voters turned away on Election Day from casting ballots this week.

The Quincy Herald-Whig reports (http://bit.ly/1WFLARo ) State's Attorney Jon Barnard filed the request Monday with the 4th District Appellate Court. The appeals court stopped plans for late voting at the request of Attorney General Lisa Madigan.

Officials in Adams County - along with several other Illinois jurisdictions - ran out of ballots during last Tuesday's primary and voters were turned away.

Madigan argued the state constitution doesn't allow for late voting. Barnard said it's a matter of fairness.

Barnard said he will not pursue the case further because of the March 29 deadline to certify election results.
