Chicago-area man sentenced in girlfriend's killing

AURORA, Ill. (AP) - A judge has sentenced a 49-year-old suburban Chicago man to a 60-year prison term for fatally shooting his girlfriend when she tried to break off their relationship.

The Kane County state's attorney's office says a circuit judge sentenced Christopher M. Whetstone Thursday. A jury convicted him in March of first-degree murder in the 2014 shooting of 22-year-old Rachel Taylor. She also lived in Aurora.

Taylor had driven to Whetstone's Aurora home to let him see their two children and he shot her in the chest. Taylor exited the vehicle yelling, "He shot me, he shot me!" He chased her as she ran screaming and shot her twice more.

State's Attorney Joe McMahon said in a statement the tragedy was amplified because two children will now grow up without their parents.
