South Bend man convicted of killing female friend
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - A South Bend man has been found guilty of killing a female friend who he had just had sex with.
A jury found 25-year-old Alberto Cruz guilty of murder Thursday in the slaying of 22-year-old Alma Del Real of South Bend.
Cruz testified he gave Del Real a ride home from a bar on April 12, 2015, and she tried to blackmail him after the two had sex. He said a fight ensued, and he thought she was dead after she fell and hit her head on the floor.
Cruz was arrested more than a month later after he made a videotaped confession to investigators and led them to her body in a remote area near Culver, about 40 miles south of South Bend.
Cruz faces sentencing on June 17.
