Letter: Immoral cuts to vital social services
I volunteer with a social service agency. I cannot stay silent while congressional Republicans propose drastic cuts to our nation's bedrock Medicaid, food, and housing programs.
The people I see have limited incomes or have lost their jobs or are senior citizens. They are dependent on our help to have a roof over their heads, food on the table and medical care. Do we want to throw them on the streets? Do we want them relying on our overloaded emergency rooms for any type of medical help?
What's being proposed is absolutely unconscionable and unthinkable in a society that claims to stand for justice and mercy.
Medicaid covers more than 93 million people. What are such vast numbers of people to do?
Housing programs are about the over 7 million low and moderate income people in this country who need housing. Food stamps have prevented the growth of hunger and starvation in this country. I don't want any children in this country to go to bed hungry.
Please, I urge you to contact your senators and congressmen today. These cuts are being proposed as we speak.
