Protesters take police shooting issue to mayors' conference
WASHINGTON (AP) - A protester attempting to draw attention to the death of a teenager at the hands of Chicago police disrupted a U.S. Conference of Mayors news conference in Washington.
The protester, later identified as April Goggans, stood silently Wednesday holding up a sign decrying the death of Laquan McDonald, while another protester shouted "Black Lives Matter" from the back of the room.
Goggans held a sign saying "16 shots and a coverup. #LaquanMcDonald #ResignRahm." Despite Goggans' refusal to leave, conference president, Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, continued the news conference. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel wasn't present.
The 17-year-old McDonald shot 16 times by white police officer in October 2014 who claimed he feared for his safety. A video of the shooting shows McDonald walking away from police. Officer Jason Van Dyke is charged with first-degree murder.
