Suburban Chicago village returns $60,000 anonymous donation

CARY, Ill. (AP) - Leaders in a suburban Chicago community have returned a $60,000 anonymous donation after it raised ethical questions.
A couple donated it to Cary early this year to help fund the replacement of village entryway signs. They didn't want their names made public on security grounds.
They first contacted Cary Mayor Mark Kownick. He knows their names.
It's not illegal for the village to accept anonymous donations. But some officials worried that doing so leaves open the possibility or the perception that the donors may expect some benefit from the village in return.
The village board voted 3 to 2 in June to return the money. Kownick says the village is looking at the possibility of using a third party to accept the donation.
