Arlington Heights Leaders Meet with Consul-General of Japan

Mayor Tom Hayes and Michael Mertes from the Village of Arlington Heights along with Jon Ridler, Mike Driskell, and Andi Ruhl from the Arlington Heights Chamber of Commerce enjoyed dinner at the Consul-General of Japan's house in Evanston, IL on Tuesday, March 22nd. The purpose of the meeting was to foster greater partnerships with Japanese businesses in Arlington Heights and also to foster growing personal relationships between business leaders.

Consul-General Toshiyuki Iwado invited Arlington Heights Japanese business owners, the Executive Director of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Chicago and other Japanese dignitaries to be a part of the evening discussion and dinner with the delegation from Arlington Heights.

"It was an honor to represent Arlington Heights and to meet the Consul-General along with the other dignitaries present," said Jon S. Ridler, Arlington Heights Chamber Executive Director. "We enjoyed a reception time of introductions before sitting down for an amazing Japanese dinner prepared by the Consul-General's personal Chef, who happens to live in Buffalo Grove. Our host was very gracious in explaining each course and encouraging us to make noise while eating our soup as is the custom."

The evening was filled with discussion ranging from the political climate in both countries, how important the Midwest is to exports to Japan, and fishing, which both Mayor Hayes and Consul-General Iwado are passionate about. "Enjoying a cultural dining experience together always promotes an effective atmosphere to engage conversation and build lasting relationships. I look forward to hosting a Japanese delegation in Arlington Heights in the near future," added Ridler.
