Sunset Fire & Picnic ignites awareness about prairie burns
Witness a sight that once awed and frightened early Illinois settlers during Schaumburg Park District's Sunset Fire & Picnic on the Prairie.
The burn is set for 6-8:30 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at Spring Valley Nature Center, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road. Participants may bring their own food or purchase beverages and grilled food at the event.
"Burning the prairie is crucial to the health of the landscape," said Mary Rice, education coordinator for Spring Valley. "It's a spectacular site, especially with the backdrop of early evening."
During the picnic, staff will explain why fire is beneficial to natural areas and demonstrate how it's used to safely manage the environment. Trained staff will conduct the burn, which participants may view from a safe distance.
Tickets are $3 per person or $12 per family of six and may be purchased at the Nature Center. All ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Alternate rain date is April 8. For information, call (847) 985-2100 or visit ParkFun.com.
