Lake Minear Fishing Derby will take place June 3

Lake Minear, the hidden gem of a recreational lake quietly nestled in downtown Libertyville, may not remain a secret much longer: A stunning photograph of the pristine lake and beachfront was chosen by the village for its 2017 vehicle sticker and is popping up on dashboards throughout Libertyville.

That's great news for the Libertyville Boat Club Inc., which operates the 72-acre lake and is angling for new members. The nonprofit is diving into the spring season with its annual catch-and-release fishing derby, to be held from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 3.

Residents are invited to try their skills at landing the catch of the day, rain or shine. There will be prizes and trophies for the winners, along with coffee and doughnuts for all. Members of the Libertyville High School Fishing Club will be on hand to offer instruction to children.

The derby fee is $5 per person or $20 per family. Register online at LakeMinearBeach.com or pay at the gate.

In addition to year-round fishing - the spring-fed lake is well-stocked with game and pan fish - Lake Minear offers swimming, boating and a shaded picnic area with tables and grills, plus some of the consistently cleanest water in Lake County.

Membership fees for the season are $175 for families, $110 for individuals and $85 for seniors.

As for that panoramic photo adorning local cars and SUVs, it was taken by Libertyville resident David Krizek.

"I feel so honored to have been able to contribute something like this to our community," said Krizek, who snapped the shot last summer on a perfect sunny day.

Lake Minear is located at 600 West Oak Spring Road.
