Official misconduct charges filed against sheriff, wife

FRANKFORT, Ind. (AP) - A central Indiana sheriff and his wife faced charges of official misconduct and conflict of interest brought by a special prosecutor.

The charges filed Friday against Clinton County Sheriff Rich Kelly and his wife, Ashley, were filed Friday in Clinton Circuit Court by special prosecutor David Thomas.

The Kellys were investigated last year for allegedly receiving payments from the county jail's commissary fund through a limited liability company they formed two months before taking office, WLFI-TV reported.

The State Board of Accounts last month asked the Kellys to re-pay more than $300,000.

Sheriff Kelly issued a statement saying 'œthis is nothing more than a political farse (sic). The items being contested are still in civil litigation in Tippecanoe County Court.'ť
