'Bar Stool Scholars: Elgin in the 1950s' to be topic at Oct. 24 Kiwanis meeting
Topical programs are fixtures of the weekly meetings of the Kiwanis Club of Elgin.
On Oct. 24, local historian Jerry Turnquist will present his popular topic "Bar Stool Scholars: Elgin in the 1950s." Learn, and maybe even reminisce about soap box derbies, mom-and-pop grocery stores, slot machine raids and more.
On Oct. 31, Stacy Zeng of the Kane County Health Department will be discussing its new endeavor, the Medical Reserve Corps, a national network of local volunteers committed to improving the health, safety, and resiliency of their communities. Volunteers include medical and public health professionals and others interested in strengthening the public health infrastructure and improving the preparedness and response capabilities of their local jurisdiction.
The Kiwanis Club of Elgin, now in its 98th year, received its charter March 9, 1920, and serves the Kiwanis International mission, to change the world one child at a time, one community at a time. In that time, the Elgin noon club donated over one million dollars to organizations in Elgin and South Elgin.
Anyone interested in joining the club is invited to attend a weekly lunch meeting, held at noon each Tuesday at The Grumpy Goat Tavern, 875 Sports Way, Elgin, at the Highlands golf course. For information, call Karen Maki at (847) 695-7589.
