W. Illinois alumni group wants president to step down

MACOMB, Ill. (AP) - A group that represents alumni at Western Illinois University is urging the president to resign.

The Alumni Council last week sent a resolution to school trustees, saying Jack Thomas should quit or be fired by the end of June. The group says Western Illinois should focus on academic programs that will make it a leader in key areas.

The Quad-City Times reports that the council also wants the school to invest in marketing and recruitment to boost enrollment.

In response, university spokeswoman Darcie Shinberger says the board has authority over personnel decisions. She says everyone should "join together to focus on the future of our university and our communities."

Trustees are meeting Thursday and Friday.
