Peoria mass transit eliminates free bus transfers

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) - Peoria is getting a new fare structure for the city's public transit.

The (Peoria) Journal Star reports (http://bit.ly/1P2Hxt2) that it takes effect on Saturday. One of the main changes is that there will no longer be free transfers on CityLink buses. The base fare has been $1 and it won't change but officials say riders who take more than one bus will have to pay twice. There also are new $3 day passes and $40 30-day passes, which were introduced in September.

The city also will have 50-cent fares for seniors, students, the disabled and veterans. Valid IDs may be necessary.

CityLink general manager Al Stanek says the changes are necessary because of a reduction in state funding. The state has been without a budget for the current fiscal year.
