Four charged in Elgin fight that injured two teens

Two women and two female juveniles from Elgin are accused of beating up a 13-year-old and a 15-year-old girl in a street fight earlier this week, police said.

Officers were called to Advocate Sherman Hospital around 4 p.m. Wednesday for a report of an injured 13-year-old girl who had been involved in a fight in the 200 block of Henry Street with a group of unknown subjects, police said.

The girl's injuries were not life-threatening. Another 15-year-old girl was also injured but did not require medical attention, police said.

The Kane County state's attorney office has authorized felony charges against Keisha Johnson, 32, and Shamika Johnson, 36, both of Elgin. Both women are charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, aggravated battery in a public place, and mob action, police said. Warrants have been issued for both women and police are actively looking for them. Their bond has been set at $40,000 each.

Police also have charged a 15-year-old girl and a 16-year-old girl, both of Elgin, who can be seen striking the victims in a video, with felony aggravated battery in a public place and mob action. The girls appeared at a detention hearing Friday.

Several videos of the fight have been circulating on social media.

One video shows more than 10 people yelling and several smaller fights breaking out. At one point two girls are shown being hit and kicked in the head while several others stand nearby either yelling, participating or recording the fight on their phones. At the end of the video, one girl appears to be passed out on the sidewalk. The fight appears to be mostly between girls, while boys are heard yelling in the background as well.

Elgin Police Chief Jeff Swoboda said Friday he was shocked adults who stood by watching the fight did not call police.

"I am pleased at the amount of help we received by way of social media, residents were rightfully outraged by this video," Swoboda said. "However, I am equally disgusted by the adult involvement and the total lack of concern by bystanders who chose to use their cellphones to video the incident rather than to call the police. We will be working with the state's attorney's office to determine if additional charges are available."

Police received more than 100 tips from citizens, and have identified additional subjects in the video to investigate.
