Trump will need support from blacks
I just finished reading the report of the Chicago police abuse of blacks and Hispanics as reported by Loretta Lynch and the Justice department. I am not writing to dispute any of their findings, and programs and better training of police officers should be put in place where needed.
However, this report is more of the same, nothing is said about the "black on black" killings which are greater in number than any other type and nothing is said about programs to "rehab" black neighborhoods where needed or training programs to teach young black men skills that will create employment for them where they can earn a living and get them off the streets.
Another issue is gangs and drugs.
I do not have the answer and I am not optimistic that this problem will be solved in my lifetime, because there will always be a seller as long as there is a buyer and as much as we try, we have not been able to shut off the flow of drugs into our country.
I recently watched President Obama's farewell address, which he returned to Chicago to deliver. Ironically, our first black president is just closing out eight years of leading this nation, but has done nothing to improve the lives in the black community, race relations are at a bigger division than ever, more black families are living in poverty, black youth unemployment is at its highest and black home ownership is at its lowest.
I do not know if our newly elected president will do any better, but he has asked for the opportunity to improve black lives and visited black neighborhoods during his campaign asking for their help and at least the opportunity to try. But he will need black leadership support to accomplish his mission.
I hope they give him the opportunity.
