US stocks edge mostly lower in early trading

NEW YORK (AP) - Stocks are edging mostly lower in early trading as the market extends a slump into a third day.
Energy stocks bucked the downward trend and moved higher Wednesday as the price of oil rose 3 percent. Chevron rose almost 1 percent.
The Dow Jones industrial average edged down 37 points, or 0.2 percent, to 17,565 as of 9:35 a.m. Eastern time.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost a point to 2,044. The Nasdaq composite inched up eight points, or 0.2 percent, to 4,852.
Bond prices fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 1.74 percent.
