Barrington, Palatine fire departments launch 'Wreath' campaigns

The Barrington and Palatine fire departments have launched their annual "Keep the Wreath Red" programs to remind everyone to be mindful of potential fires caused by holiday decorations.

Holiday wreaths with red light bulbs will hang through New Year's Day at the Barrington fire station and the five fire stations in Palatine. If there is a fire caused by holiday decorations, firefighters will replace a red bulb with a white bulb.

Fire departments across the nation participate in the public safety campaign that began in the 1950s and typically starts the day after Thanksgiving.

The fire departments are also reminding residents about fire safety during the holidays. Advice includes:

• Check that all holiday lighting and electrical cords have UL safety certification; replace any worn or damaged wiring.

• Use indoor/outdoor lighting and extension cords as they are intended.

• Do not run lighting or extension cords under rugs, through windows and doors, or across sidewalks.

• Do not overload electrical cords. If they are hot, they are overloaded.

• Turn off all holiday lighting prior to leaving or going to bed.

• If displaying a live Christmas tree, use a sturdy tree stand and water often.

• Keep the tree, wreaths and holiday decorations away from any heat source such as fireplaces, space heaters, candles and heating ducts.

• Use sturdy candle holders and place them on firm, uncluttered surfaces. Do not place candles on windows near blinds and curtains.

• Have working smoke alarms on every level of your home, in the hallways outside bedrooms, and inside each bedroom. Test alarms monthly, replace batteries at least once a year, and replace alarms when they are 10 years old.

• Have working carbon monoxide alarms within 15 feet of all sleeping areas.

• Keep a multipurpose (ABC type) fire extinguisher handy and know how to use it.

• Have your chimney professionally inspected and cleaned, and use a secure fireplace screen.

• Clean the lint from your dryer after every load and have the dryer professionally cleaned at least yearly.
