Northern Illinois Food Bank to distribute free groceries to 1,000 households in Elgin Nov. 4
Last year, Northern Illinois Food Bank distributed 10.8 million meals to neighbors in Kane County and served an average of 66,000 neighbors each month.
Inflation, rising food costs and the ending of the emergency government benefits are driving more families, seniors, and individuals to seek assistance from the Northern Illinois Food Bank pantries and programs.
To help neighbors in Kane County, Northern Illinois Food Bank will be hosting a free grocery distribution mobile popup on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Elgin Community College.
It will be first come, first served until supplies run out from 9 to 11 a.m. at the college, 1700 Spartan Drive. It will be held rain or shine.
Volunteers will distribute free groceries to the first 1,000 households in a drive-through model. Food will be loaded into cars by the volunteers. No ID, proof of income or registration required.
What is a popup mobile market? A popup mobile market is when 1-2 semi-truckloads of food arrives on location in a community for short period of time and distributed to neighbors. Mobile markets typically last 2 hours and provide individuals with common grocery items such as breads, cereals, dairy and fresh produce. Items will vary depending on availability.
In the fiscal year from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023, Northern Illinois Food Bank, through its network of more than 900 food pantries, soup kitchens and feeding programs, provided 82.3 million meals across the 13-county service area.
