Rizzo ready to return to Cubs lineup

Anthony Rizzo took some hacks in a simulated game Tuesday and is on target to return to the lineup for the Cubs' final exhibition game.

Rizzo hasn't technically played since the team's first intrasquad game back on July 4 because of a sore back.

“We're just waiting to see how today went,” Cubs manager David Ross told reporters Tuesday on a teleconference. “Took some great swings, said he felt ready, doesn't think it's going to be an issue for the game tomorrow. So the plan is to have him start at first base.”

The Cubs close their three-game exhibition schedule against Minnesota on Wednesday at Wrigley Field, then host Milwaukee in the delayed season opener on Friday. Rizzo's return would put the Cubs at full strength except for starting pitcher Jose Quintana, who is recovering from a hand injury.

“It's a plus for sure when Anthony's in the lineup,” Ross said. “And just what he represents about the at-bats we want to have. These guys made some strong comments in spring training about the at-bats we want to try to have as a team and what we want to represent. Anthony is a big part of that.

“He sets the example, he sets the tone, he's a great player, he's an all-star. His energy's been missed in the dugout. He's fun to have in the dugout when things are going well.”

Chatwood charged up:

Tyler Chatwood was the primary pitcher in Tuesday's simulated game, which was designed to prepare him for Sunday's start against the Brewers.

Manager David Ross had strong praise for Chatwood's performance in both legs of training camp.

“I thought Chatty came in and looked probably as good as anybody at the start of (March) spring training in Arizona,” Ross said. “He continued to work, you could just feel that hunger, I think.

“His journey here as a Cub has had some ups and downs, and I think he has a ton of confidence from all he's been through and come out in a really good place mechanically, emotionally, mentally. We're going to continue to back him in that area, because we really like his stuff. His makeup is just a bulldog competitor. He's a guy you like taking the ball out there every fifth day.”

Cubs notes:

Manager David Ross said veteran Jon Lester will start Wednesday's exhibition game and the plan is for him to take the hill in Game No. 4 on Monday at Cincinnati. … Some lineup changes in Monday's game against the White Sox were Kris Bryant at first base, David Bote at third and Victor Caratini behind the plate. Steven Souza started in left and Albert Almora in center with Kyle Schwarber at DH. Nico Hoerner started at second base in both games against the White Sox, moving to shortstop and center field later in Monday's contest.
