IU's baccalaureate to include student speaker for 1st time

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - The first Indiana University student to graduate with a standup comedy degree will also be the first student keynote speaker at the schools' baccalaureate ceremony.

The (Bloomington) Herald-Times reports (http://bit.ly/2q3snTB ) that Robert Sherrell will speak at Friday morning's events in addition to a faculty guest speaker. The service will begin at 11 a.m. in the Whittenberger Auditorium in the Indiana Memorial Union.

Sherrell was able to pursue his unique degree through IU's Individualized Major Program.

This year's faculty speaker will be IU law professor Dawn Johnsen.

The university has held baccalaureate ceremonies for nearly 180 years. The ceremony includes a procession to Native American flute music, gathering words and an invitation to prayer.
