Join us beginning this Monday, July 31st, for an environmental science summer youth day camp: Air, Water, Earth at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
This three-week day camp is an experiential learning program that teaches science in an accessible, enjoyable, collaborative environment - both in the classroom and outdoors.

When it comes to educational summer camps for your child, there are many choices.
UIC's summer camp is an interactive program that engages campers in applying STEM concepts (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) to their surrounding environment.
Knowing STEM principles will give your child an advantage in their regular math, science, and computer science schoolwork throughout the year. UIC's summer program integrates classroom activities with hands-on experiences outside of the classroom.
Campers will work on projects and conduct experiments in class, at the UIC Greenhouse, and at a local field trip site. Among many learning activities, campers will:
- Construct instruments for measuring weather
- Test soil
- Create a micro-climate within an aquarium
- Build a watershed
Camp Details
UIC's environmental science day camp is for children who will be entering 6th or 7th grade this Fall.
The next camp session is three weeks long, this Monday, July 31st through Friday, August 18th.
The camp is a full-day program offered Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. - convenient for parents and guardians.
The camp takes place on the UIC campus, so campers will enjoy the full benefits of university classrooms, laboratories, and special facilities like the UIC greenhouse.
The camp experience is limited to 30 campers per session.
The camper to educational staff ratio will not exceed 10:1.
The camp fee is $825 for the three weeks.
Educational Benefits
UIC's camp introduces campers to STEM concepts through three main environmental science education themes: air, water, and earth.
The camp curriculum is fun and was developed using Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), which incorporate the latest major advances: 1) in science and 2) in how children learn science effectively.
UIC's camp helps children:

The camp is taught by a National Board Certified teacher with 16 years of experience teaching middle school science. She is also credentialed in English as a Second Language, and will be assisted by one other certified instructor and an intern from the UIC College of Education. Additional support staff will be on-hand to help as needed.
Camp Curriculum
Campers will study one environmental science theme per week:
- Air: learn about the earth's atmosphere, weather and climate, global warming, greenhouse gases, and air pollution. Campers will also build instruments for measuring weather.
- Water: learn about water systems, water density, seasonal cycles, the Great Lakes, fish habitats, the water crisis, and how to test water quality. Campers will also build a watershed.
- Earth: learn about soil profiles, ecosystems, composting, tree and leaf identification, tree canopy and density, and measuring tree height. Campers will also study the local ecosystem, including insects and plants, and create a final project.
