Grant handles Antioch

Grant boys basketball coach Wayne Bosworth knew exactly what he was watching when the majority of his present-day players were in the fifth grade.

"I saw them coming up,'' Bosworth remarked. "I was licking my chops."

Grant had one Northern Lake County Conference loss on its schedule coming into Wednesday night's game at home. And the team that had notched that win against the Bulldogs was visiting Antioch.

The Bulldogs (14-10, 7-1) never trailed in this game. On seven consecutive points from leading scorer Dan Filippone (26 points) the Sequoits (11-8, 3-4) had crawled within 38-35 with two minutes to play in the third quarter.

Grant coasted from there and posted a 68-56 victory.

Hunter Waszkowski had no points to report at the end of the first quarter. He had 12 by halftime. This player doesn't drift back to the fifth grade with this group of Bulldogs.

"I joined them in the seventh grade,'' Waszkowski said. "We are really good friends on and off the court. This was a really fun game."

Senior Night at Grant went off without a hitch.

Grant's inside power threat Tavares Williams (10 points, 9 rebounds) got his team off to a good start. He soon was joined in the scoring column by fellow senior Henry Kusiak (17 points).

"I think I'm a good defender,'' Kusiak noted. "I'm out there to get rebounds and keep the ball moving,."

Filipone had only 6 first-half points for Antioch. He then found his range as he scored 9 points in the third quarter.

"He really got hot,'' said Waszkowski.

"We really didn't shoot well tonight,'' said Antioch coach Jim White. "It was Senior Night here and Grant brought it for 32 minutes. They had four guys in double digits."

Torren Grana-Curry and Kusiak hit back-to-back 3-pointers to help pad the Bulldogs' lead to the fourth quarter.

If there was some news to dampen the night for Grant, Grana-Curry appeared to hurt his knee late in the game.
