2nd type of Asian carp found just downstream of Lake Monroe

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - State wildlife officials say a second type of invasive Asian carp has reached the waters just downstream of Indiana's largest reservoir.

The recent find of bighead carp in Salt Creek just below Lake Monroe's dam comes after silver carp have been found since at least 2015 in the dam's tailwaters.

Asian carp haven't been found in the lake, which spans nearly 11,000 acres in Monroe and Brown counties.

But the Department of Natural Resources is reminding anglers it's illegal to use small fish taken from the dam's tailwaters as bait in Lake Monroe itself.

That prohibition aims to keep juvenile Asian carp from reaching the lake and its upstream tributaries.

DNR fisheries biologist Dave Kittaka (Kih-TAH'-kuh) tells The Herald-Times "prevention is the best way to stop" Asian carp from spreading.
