Family of man killed in Floyd County crash gets nearly $13M

MADISON, Ind. (AP) - A jury has awarded nearly $13 million in damages to the family of one of four people killed in a vehicle crash in Floyd County almost four years ago.

Charles M. Barlow was sentenced to 44 years in prison after pleading guilty to several counts, including causing death when operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

Court documents say the 35-year-old Barlow was driving more than 80 mph before the crash on Indiana 111 near the Horseshoe Southern Indiana casino. The crash killed the other driver and the three passengers of his off-duty taxi, including 60-year-old Thomas Stinson.

The News and Tribune (http://bit.ly/28YpGJO ) reports that Stinson's family filed a lawsuit against Barlow and Yellow Cab for pain and suffering and punitive damages.

A Jefferson County jury ruled in the family's favor Tuesday. Attorney Alex Davis says Yellow Cab made a settlement with the family.

"I wouldn't say we're happy, I mean their family member is dead and nothing is going to make them happy about it," Davis said. "I think they're satisfied and they feel like they got the justice they wanted."

Davis said that it is unlikely that Stinson's family will be able collect the money awarded since Barlow is responsible for the entire monetary award.

According to Davis, the most likely route to collect the judge would be to attempt to garnish Barlow's wages when he is released from prison.
