Girls soccer: Huntley's fast start freezes Hampshire

Wind, cold and sloppy, muddy field conditions.

The Huntley Red Raiders certainly weren't going to allow inclement and adverse weather hinder their performance Thursday afternoon in Hampshire.

Tallying 3 goals during the first 8 minutes and 22 seconds of the game, Huntley seized control early in cruising to a 8-0 win over the host Whip-Purs in Fox Valley Conference crossover action.

"With such a sloppy muddy wet field we wanted to score quickly and take the lead and gain momentum early," said Huntley coach Kris Grabner. "We didn't want it to be a close game where a bad skip or a deflection could determine the match. We had good pressure early and ran our sets well."

Creighton-bound senior forward Taryn Jakubowski spearheaded the Red Raiders (5-1-1) attack with 3 goals and 2 assists.

"We wanted to play fast and get some goals early," said Jakubowski. "We are getting better as a team and our connections and passes are better. This was a good team effort."

The Red Raiders, who outshot Hampshire 24-0 and led 5-0 at halftime, also received 2 goals from Brianna Wilder and 1 goal each from Tayah Owens, AJ Sunter and Ally Sunter.

With 6 assists on the 8 goals, Jakubowski and Alyssa Kaufman picked up 2 helpers each while Owens and Victoria Padal registered 1 assist apiece.

"I like the way we are passing the ball," said Grabner. "Our quick passes are allowing us to put a lot of pressure on goal."

Hampshire coach Sara O'Toole is impressed with Huntley's program but realizes her team must cut down on key mistakes.

"Huntley has a great program and they are very, very good every season," said O'Toole. "Huntley is a very skilled team and they have tremendous talent. We had too many breakdowns and we have a lot of kinks to work out on defense. Huntley really communicates well on offense and defense. We don't talk enough and communicate. It is something we need to work on. Our inexperience and youthfulness is showing early in the season against good competition.''

Hampshire goalkeeper Catherine Kochanski collected 15 saves for the Whip-Purs (1-3).

"Catherine made some great saves," said O'Toole. "Huntley certainly could have scored many more goals. She is getting better every match and is turning into a very good goalie. We have to be a better defensive team in front of her."
