Chicago police: Man shot after pointing gun at officer

CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago police say an officer shot and injured a man after he pointed a gun at the officer on the city's west side.

A statement from the Chicago Police Department says officers, who were monitoring the perimeter of the Puerto Rican Festival in Humboldt Park, noticed a suspicious man in the area and when they approached him, he fled while holding his waistband. The statement says pursuing officers saw he was holding a handgun and ordered him to drop it.

The police department says the armed man turned toward an officer, who then fired his handgun, striking the man on his lower body.

The man was taken to a hospital in stable condition. No officers were injured.

The officer's use of force in the incident will be investigated.
