Records: Woman charged in deadly crash tried to flee scene
HARTFORD CITY, Ind. (AP) - A woman accused of crashing into a northeastern Indiana home, killing a 74-year-old man and his great-grandson, allegedly tried to flee the scene after being handcuffed.
Brandi S. Bare of Montpelier was handcuffed and placed in a police car after last week's deadly crash in the Blackford County city. But Bare, 46, apparently managed to remove the cuff from one of her wrists and walked away from the scene, The Star Press reported, citing court documents.
Bare tried to run from an approaching officer and reportedly struggled with police before she was again handcuffed and returned to the patrol vehicle, court documents state.
Police said Bare crashed 'œstraight through'ť a house in Montpelier on June 2, killing homeowner Jerry 'œJake'ť Michael and his 5-year-old great-grandson, Jenson Reynolds, who were sitting on the front porch with other relatives.
Jenson Reynolds' 1-year-old sister and the siblings' father were hospitalized with serious injuries following the crash in the city about 60 miles (96.6 kilometers) northeast of Indianapolis.
Bare faces six felonies, including causing death when driving while intoxicated and reckless homicide. She also faces a misdemeanor count of resisting law enforcement.
Bare was being held at the Blackford County Jail on a $5,000 bond ahead of an initial hearing scheduled for Thursday.
Online court records do not list an attorney who could speak on her behalf.
